Origin and tradition
The Panji stories originated in East Java and spread through Southeast Asia. The solid line traces the arrival of the 1808 manuscript Or. 1825 in Leiden.
In Murta Smara, as summarised in the UNESCO nomination, Panji hears that the ruler of Bali is a skilled embroiderer. This leads him to question the ruler’s identity. A battlefield encounter becomes a scene of recognition between two people who have been apart. That detail belongs to the Surakarta version. The Bali entry points to a separate manuscript in the same story cycle.
