Origin and tradition
A Tonga water-spirit tradition around Kariba on the Zambezi. 2008–2009 dates interviews in Zimbabwe. 2017 is the publication year of the article on the Zambian tradition.
A study of Simaamba traditions in Zambia connects Nyaminyami with the waters of the Kariba Gorge. Fieldwork on the Zimbabwean side traces how the meaning of the water spirit changed for communities after the dam and resettlement. Two records looking at the same river bring the story’s ties to place and memory into view.
