Age-appropriate, short, high-quality stories
In short: Black Horse writes every story for the child's age: very short sentences and repetition for ages 2–3, one clear problem for ages 4–5, short dialogue for ages 6–7, and richer vocabulary with a small surprise for ages 8–10. Stories are sized for 3, 5 or 10 minutes of reading aloud (about 100 words per minute) and always end calmly and warmly.
What changes with age?
- Ages 2–3: sentences of 5–8 words, sound effects, repeated patterns.
- Ages 4–5: simple words, one small problem, a clear solution.
- Ages 6–7: new words explained through context, short dialogue.
- Ages 8–10: richer storytelling and a small surprise, still easy to read aloud.
How is the length set?
When reading aloud to young children we count on about 100 words per minute: a 3-minute story is roughly 300 words, a 5-minute story about 500 and a 10-minute story about 1,000.
